Germany 2016; Beer, Sweaters & Cologne

Living in Germany has been an amazing journey & I will always be grateful for it. I got to fully embrace the culture of the country over the past 6 months. It’s one thing to travel from place to place, but it’s another thing to settle down as an immigrant somewhere far from home. Even if Germany is similar to Canada on many levels (scholarship, health care, social assistance), there is still a few things that are considerably different…

… the language …

Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsmütze is a German word… Is it serious? Thankfully, most people also speak English. Sadly, most of the websites & announcements (government things, train stations, road signs…) are only in German… I am still debating whether I should try to learn it or not…

… the history …

Hitler’s madness, the Berlin Wall demolition, all the political issues & changes… That was really not that long ago… Looking at their history helps a lot to understand the way they behave. Serious, direct, though, organized, careful… It all make sense when you think about it.

… rain, rain, rain …

I must say I’ve never seen so much rain in my life. It’s been a little more sunny lately, but it’s probably because there is no more water in the sky…

… speed limit …

The fact that people can go as fast as they want on the highway is for sure the craziest thing I have ever seen in my life…

… cars …

Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche… At least, they are producing amazing cars to handle the no speed limit thing…

… beer …

Drinking beer, drinking water… Same thing… In the morning, at night, at home, in a bar, in the street… It’s all good!

… eau de Cologne …

Another German thing. Logic now that I think about it…

Psst! I am loving every second of the sweater weather, if only it could stay like that forever!
